EDM Announces Investment of $110M for Solar Plant in Maputo

Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), in partnership with private companies, plans to invest 110.6 million dollars (7.1 billion meticals) in the installation of a 60 MW solar power plant in Maputo province, next to the Corumana dam in the Moamba district, as reported by Lusa.

According to an environmental impact study, the project is the result of a collaboration between EDM and the private company VBC, through the operator Central Solar de Corumana.

The investment is part of the government’s strategic plan for the energy sector, which aims to achieve universal electrification by 2030, as well as creating direct and indirect jobs and contributing to local economic growth.

“The new plant will be installed on an area of 142 hectares, along the R802 road, which links Sábiè to Massingir, approximately 6.5 kilometres from the Corumana dam. The strategic location will make it possible to take advantage of the region’s favourable climatic conditions for solar energy production.”

Mozambique currently has solar power plant projects with an installed capacity of 125 MW, 80 MW of which are already connected to the national grid.

In the first quarter of 2024, solar energy production in the country grew by 14 per cent, but it still only represents 0.4 per cent of total electricity production, dominated by hydroelectric plants, with the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Plant accounting for 82.2 per cent of the total.

The government plans to expand solar production capacity, with plans to install 1000 MW by 2030, spread across various regions of the country, as part of a ‘solar revolution’. The goal by 2050 is to reach at least 7.5 GW of solar photovoltaic capacity and 2.5 GW of wind power.

According to the Energy Transition Strategy, accelerating these types of projects is fundamental to balancing domestic energy needs and guaranteeing the supply of green energy for large industrial consumers and for export.

The creation of a favourable environment for private investment in renewable energies, especially solar and wind, is seen as crucial to the success of this strategy.
