Tete: Government Aims to Make Zumbo the Province’s Third Largest Coal Basin

According to the administrator of the Zumbo district, Lucas Muidingue, the project will be the first of its kind in the town of Mucangaze and will include an open-cast mine. He guaranteed that all operations will respect strict safety standards and environmental sustainability, ensuring that mining activity brings economic benefits without compromising the preservation of natural resources.

The project is part of the government’s strategy to expand the mining sector in Tete, a province recognised for its vast coal potential. Once the mine is up and running, it is expected to create jobs and have a positive impact on the local economy, boosting sectors such as logistics, construction and services.

Currently, the administrative processes are at an advanced stage at central and provincial levels, and it is hoped that the environmental certification and mining concession will be issued soon. With this, Zumbo will be able to consolidate itself as a new coal mining hub, further strengthening Tete’s position as one of Mozambique’s main mining centres.

The initiative is part of the government’s efforts to attract private investment and foster the sustainable development of the mining industry, ensuring that the country’s natural resources are exploited responsibly and contribute to the economic and social growth of the surrounding communities.
