World Bank Announces $100M to Expand Digital Infrastructure in Africa. Mozambique Among First to Benefit from Investment

The funding will go to the Raxio Group, a data centre operator with a growing presence on the African continent. The aim is to respond to the growing demand for secure and modern data hosting solutions, while also strengthening cybersecurity in strategic countries.

With this support, the Group will build state-of-the-art data centres in Mozambique and the other selected countries. These infrastructures aim to support the development of the local digital economy, facilitate access to emerging technologies and create solid foundations for innovation in sectors such as banking, health and education.

‘The investment is in line with the World Bank’s efforts to promote sustainable and inclusive economic growth in Africa,’ said Makhtar Diop, Raxio Group Vice President for Africa, adding that ’digital infrastructure is a critical factor in economic transformation.’

The initiative represents an important step towards strengthening the continent’s digital connection, bridging significant gaps in data centre infrastructure that have limited the use of essential technologies such as cloud computing, big data and e-commerce.

The World Bank’s support for this initiative comes at a time when digital transformation is high on the agenda of many African governments. As part of its wider strategy to accelerate Africa’s digital economy, the organisation has previously invested in digital infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity, developing digital skills and promoting innovation across the continent.

As the African continent continues to embrace the digital age, these investments are expected to play a key role in accelerating economic development, reducing the digital divide and empowering local communities.
