Samsung Heavy Industries to Secure $2.5B Contract to Build New FLNG Unit in Mozambique

The news was reported on Monday 14 April by the Business Korea news portal, days after the government officially approved the development plan for the Coral Norte gas field, located in the Rovuma basin, one of the largest natural gas reservoirs on the African continent. With an estimated global investment of 460.8 billion meticals (7.2 billion dollars), the project is expected to produce 3.55 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas a year for 30 years, with start-up scheduled for the second half of 2028.

Samsung, recognised as one of the world’s largest offshore infrastructure builders, is expected to formalise the contract in the coming weeks. If confirmed, this will be the South Korean company’s largest order to date in 2025, surpassing the current order volume of around 140.8 billion meticals (2.2 billion dollars) at the beginning of April.

The project is made all the more important by the fact that Samsung has already successfully delivered the FLNG unit of the Coral South project in 2022, also developed by Eni. The inauguration ceremony, held in 2021, was attended by the then Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, and the first lady, emphasising the strategic importance of this type of project for the country.

Samsung Heavy Industries may build new floating platform for Eni projects in Mozambique

FLNG units function as floating natural gas plants, capable of extracting, liquefying, storing and exporting gas directly at sea, without the need for infrastructure on land. This technology makes it possible to exploit remote or smaller offshore fields, reducing costs and environmental impacts.

Mozambique is thus consolidating its position as a major player in the global natural gas market, with the potential to strengthen its energy independence, attract foreign investment and stimulate economic growth. The growing demand for natural gas, seen as an alternative with lower carbon emissions, places the country in a strategic position, especially in an international context of energy transition.
