Honeywell Guarantees Solutions for Natural Gas Purification in Mozambique
Honeywell is implementing cutting-edge technology in the Mozambican energy sector, helping to purify natural gas before the liquefaction process. This development represents a significant milestone in the Rovuma LNG project, located on the Afungi peninsula, in the municipality of Palma, Cabo Delgado province, according to the Honeywell portal.
The Rovuma LNG project, led by Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV), aims to respond to the growing global demand for natural gas and improve access to energy in the region. MRV is a partnership between ExxonMobil, Eni S.p.A. and the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), which will incorporate Honeywell UOP’s advanced solutions into the gas pre-treatment process.
The technologies include the SeparSIVTM heavy hydrocarbon removal system, based on thermal oscillation adsorption, and the MolSIVTM unit, designed to remove water and carbon dioxide. This solvent-free process uses adsorption systems to also remove mercury and other contaminants, ensuring that the gas meets the strict standards required by the industry, with minimal pressure loss in the process.
‘Our technology is essential to guaranteeing the quality of natural gas, bringing it in line with the highest industry standards,’ said Rajesh Gattupalli, president of Honeywell UOP. ‘This not only optimises production efficiency, but also reinforces the sector’s commitment to cleaner energy solutions.’
Arne Gibbs, general manager of ExxonMobil Mozambique, emphasised the importance of this collaboration: ‘The integration of Honeywell’s proven technologies into our project demonstrates our commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility. Together we are paving the way for a cleaner energy future in Mozambique.’
The Rovuma LNG facility is expected to produce around 18 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year (Mtpa), using 12 modular liquefaction units, each with a capacity of 1.5 Mtpa. To feed these units, the project will have two parallel pre-treatment systems of 9 Mtpa each, optimising gas processing before liquefaction.
With this investment in technology and infrastructure, Honeywell is not only strengthening Mozambique’s position in the global energy market, but also fostering local economic growth. The Rovuma LNG project reflects the potential of technological solutions to address global energy challenges, benefiting millions of people with access to cleaner and more affordable energy.
